David A. Hudson 1948-2018
David A. Hudson grew up in Burr Oak, Michigan as one of four sons to hard-working parents. Dave learned to work hard at a young age, working for farmers doing anything from harvesting mint to cleaning chicken coops. This continued through high school, where Dave also maintained good grades and excelled at four sports. Despite the work ethic, Dave knew what it was like to go without.
Dave worked his way through college earning a math teaching certificate from Western Michigan University. There he met his wife, Karen, and they moved to Gobles, Michigan when Dave got his first teaching and coaching jobs. Gobles became a permanent home for Dave and Karen. They raised three children there, and Dave spent 33 years teaching math and coaching sports. The Gobles community was home to Dave and he supported all school activities, like the music and drama programs, as well as serving on the city commission and briefly as Mayor of Gobles.
As a person, Dave had ambition and pushed himself to do everything to the best of his ability. This radiated to his teaching and coaching, where he pushed not only knowledge and skills, but also responsibility, sportsmanship, and work ethic. More than anything, Dave wanted to help create responsible, productive adults.
In his job, Dave recognized students in situations similar to his childhood. He occasionally hired students to do work for him so they could earn money to reach a goal. Dave bought basketball shoes for a student who needed them. Dave wasn’t a rich man, but helped behind the scenes when he could.
